No, the resistors are not necessary for the example, so you can ignore them. They're just there to show proper placement when you would need them (any real project, basically, since less than one ohm resistance makes the current shoot through the roof).

Yes, you could have put the switches in series (directly connect them), but the point here was to show that you can have the digital switches, which is important once you discover that we can store digitally as well. It also makes wiring less complicated when you want to wire the "inputs" to more than one "operation."
